"Gabriel was not in any way nervous. It looked as if his competitive circumstances made no difference to him. None of the elements, nor his enemy, had any effect on his courage, passion or reflexes. He went above the lip on his first wave, pumping once very quickly to get down the line, almost catlike, and very lightly, turns the middle axis of the board on the lip. His fins burst free and he maintained a natural follow through spinning in the whitewash. On another wave he pumped quickly and set a line, which ended in a large, hands-free, backside air reverse. That particular wave was underscored but a next wave was over-scored and Gabriel Medina defeated CJ Hobgood."
